 Christmas Herring

Just as you thought it was the Grinch who stole
Bass season

The bays and ocean fill with little Silver Kings, Herring!
This Year seems to be a bit better than last year.
Although we didn't get the big Bass on the Herring
they seemed to come just after the Bass left
But for those of us who love
Pickled Herring it's a banner year so far
We were able to find the Herring real good in
and around the docks and piers
The December full moon with the high tide.
Get there around 4 pm or just before dusk and don't
forget your Sabikki Rigs and
you should be in for a treat
They run up and down the dock, sometimes all you have to do
Is jig straight up and down and other times
you can cast out off the end and jig it back to you
covering more ground and catching more herring
The run usually lasts for 1 hour maybe less
So don't be late or you'll miss the rush
also 1st light I've been told is good 2
although I always went in the PM and had good results.
The past couple of nights produced
17 the 1st night

Cary and his sons got 62 WOW!!!

Click to watch video

The next night only 2 for me and 13 for Chris Nappe
I gave my 2 to him so he could make some Pickled herring
So last night I was like 50/50 on going
But there was no wind and it was in the 40's
Bob Likeitreallyis was there
So I decided to go and I nailed 22
More than enough to make several Jars of Herring
My Daughter Mia loves fish
She helped me clean them all touching the eyes and guts
and washing the blood down the sink

So after following Cary's recipe my jars are sitting in the ref
waiting to fermenting into MMMMmmmmm
Great Christmas Treats
I have to let them sit for 1 week so Christmas Eve
will be the opening of the Jars
I was able to make 8 Jars we ate 2 on Christmas Eve

here's the recipe

Pickled Herring by Cary Servings:
Estimated cooking time: Posted By: SeaLion

1 Pound Fresh Herring; scaled, filleted, skin on/off
  (Approximately 8 - 10 Herring per Jar)
Salt Brine
1 teaspoon Mixed Pickling Spice
1 Bay Leaf
pinch of Dill
dash of Black Pepper
medium Onion, thinly sliced
few small pieces of Carrot, thinly sliced
fresh Garlic slices/chunks
1/3 cup Sugar
1-1/2 cups White Vinegar
1 quart Mason Jar

To make the salt brine, mix enough salt in a bowl of water to make a salty solution to float a raw egg (or until good & salty).
Cut fish into 1-inch pieces & place in salt brine, cover & refrigerate for 1 day.
Discard salt brine & wash herring well in cold water.  Dry the Herring with paper towels.
In a saucepan, bring vinegar to a boil adding pickling spice, dill, pepper, sugar & bay leaf. Mix until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat & cool.
In a one quart jar put herring, onion, carrot & garlic. Fill to top with cooled pickling solution. Keep tightly closed jar in refrigerator 3 to 4 days until ready to serve.

I like to mix drained pickled herring & onions with sour cream & serve on a toasted English muffin or saltine crackers.  Or you can just eat it straight from the jar. Yum...

Enjoy

See you next season
Wishing everyone a
Merry Christmas
and Happy Holidays

Baby it's Cold Out Side

A BIG FAT 20 LBS BASS 38 plus inches
Kat even made the Local Southampton Moriches/Manorville Press
Thanks to Michael Wright

Southampton Press December 12, 2009

It was so cold this morning, 23 degrees, I didn't want to go fishing
I opted to stay in my warm bed
I said to my wife it's high tide at 11:45 Am
we can work out going while Mia's in school
Ok my wife says lets go!
I head down to the ocean I look around
Not a bird or fish the Ocean looked BARREN!
I called Kat don't expect much it looks like its over
Come on lets just go you and I
we'll have a fun time even if we don't catch anything
I reluctantly said ok and met her at Union Ave dock
I had her pole all rigged with a
1.5 White Blue Frog Buck Tail
tipped with a solid red and Split tail white Uncle Josh trailer

This combo along with a VERY SLOW REEL
proved to be DEADLY as it wasn't long before
KAT WAS ON!!!

A BIG FAT 20 LBS BASS 36 plus inches
Since it was her last Bass Of the Season we decided to let her go

We set up again Bam Pablo On!!!

We go back to my spot and Bam Kats on again
This time I got the Video camera out and we
Snapped a few good shots too
Click to Play Kats Video

We'll the total tally for the day was
4 bass 3 keepers to 20Lbs
All released to grow bigger for us next year!
Finally after 4 trips Kat gets her
Biggest Moriches Bass yet!!!
I'm so glad she made me go out

Nothing Big to report but my cousin wanted to hit the
Ocean 1 more time this year
We decided to go out on the out going tide
and I think it was a good move because
the reports were no fish in the AM???
Anyway I said to Dan yesterday we got the fish right here
on a 2.5 oz White Buck Tail with Red and White Josh Trailer
exact same place 1st cast Dan's on
It just missed keeper size 27.5" so we returned it
and we worked the area only
to land 1 more short for us
On the brighter side I just heard there's herring in
Montauk and someone landed a few bigger Bass in Shinnecock
Let's hope they make there way down the beach
Also I saw my friend Jr and his Dad on the beach

Jr snapped a very of us fishing today

As you can see it was a lot nicer than yesterday's conditions
Warm and basically calm conditions
Temp 48/49 a bit weedy and water clarity was about 3'?

Kat's Keeper!!!

Kat Finally got her keeper!!!

http://www.youtube.com/group/Pablo2008videos# Click Pic to play video
It was a ROUGH and TOUGH day
on the sea
Even though it was just a keeper 28"
We were happy to land that
Seas were easy 4 to 6'

We got out early 6 AM armed with eels,
Buck Tails and Storm Shads
Winds were blowing 10 from the south west
when we arrived
steadily increasing all morning long
We tried to get to where all the birds were no good
Waves were just 2 much,
just not worth it
So we drifted eels in the inlet along with every body else
Saw several friends it was slim pickings for all.
We decided to switch over to Buck Tails
I was throwing a 1.5 oz Chartreuse (green) with Yellow
But I needed a heaver one so I busted out 2 brand new
2.5 oz 1 White and the other 1 Chartreuse blue frog's
I tipped Kat's with a solid red josh and a
white split tail trailer
On mine I put solid yellow with a red split tail trailer.
Soon Kat was on with a keeper

We set right back up and Kat was on again

Boy she really put that Capt Neil rod to the test
but it worked flawlessly and she landed 3 Bass
RELEASING THEM ALL

Kat said she prayed to God and he told him to use
the White Buck Tail with Red
Well THANK YOU GOD!!!
The ride home would have been Hell if she didn't
catch that Bass
Saw my buddy Jr on the east jetty

We stayed till the wind got to be too much
and headed home around 11 AM
Hopefully this wind will go away and
we'll get another shot at the fish
they were right in my spot just
couldn't get to them today
Lets see what tomorrow brings

Where's the Fish Jr ???

Had out Jr aka Bigbass and Chris aka Codie Jones.

It was a calm at first and the seas gradually built all morning long.

We had many run off's.

It seemed the Bass would pick up our baits and run then drop it.

We would let them run and the guys did great but it was all swing and a miss???

Our baits kept coming back without a scratch???

I had one pick it up run drop it, then pick it up again and run drop it, now the 3rd time it was peeling off my Penn 975 lever drag like never before I had to put my thumb on it just so it wouldn't spool.

I said I go you now you SOB!

Set the hook my drag starts screaming then pop it lets go???

Oh man that was a big one but Pablo you can't win them all the time.

So today you get the consolation prize a couple of 8 lbs blues lol. Everyone got them...

No Chinese Take Out Today lol
By 10 am we couldn't stay there any longer and we headed in.

I did see my good friend Byron pick up a bass right next to us.

There still here!!!
Can't wait for this weather to clear up, rough seas a head for this weekend.
I have openings all next week

Who's Hungry???

What a day! WHAT A DAY!!
I got to the boat 1/2 hour early
Had the heater running to warm things up

Toasty warm inside the cabin
Had all the poles rigged and baited
6 AM Dean shows up
Dean says What are we waiting 4???
I tell him Mark and his girl friend are coming.
Do you have his number yes, I called him at 6:15 Am
Message ???
I say to Dean, at 6:30 AM push Off
Dean says hey they did you a favor now you can fish
We always have the best times when it's just you and I
I spoke to him last night they said they were going like 5 times
Well as we hit the back of the inlet we see
MEGA SHADS ALL OVER AGAIN
and Schoolie Bass being caught.
I say to Dean If we stop we'll get caught up in it
and wind up with small fish
What you want to do? It was hard for us to pass up such a
Treat like that but luckily it was the right move
I headed to the spot it was slack tide and flat calm
no one was out there but us.
The Bass were ROLLING ALL OVER
and we quickly sent out our eels
before we could let the lines out
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!
and Pablo On!!!

 Big 24 LBS BASS!!!
While I was landing that fish I got another
20 LBS Bass as well
we had all three lines on the same time and only
2 guys to work them
I love those 5 alarm fires

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Hu-WY_Bcz0

Pablo and Dean easily LIMITED OUT
and we were
throwing back keeper after keeper
I said to Dean this was the best day yet

This 31" was the smallest fish today but it was the one that
Limited us out
We saw many other anglers hooking up
and everyone worked together and it was
all good!!!
Buck Tails and Storm Shads were working too
action died down around 10 AM
we left at 11 to go cut and clean all the fish.
So what does the title have to do with this report?
I'll tell you.
See on the way up Wm Floyd Pky
I was thinking
How good Sesame Chicken would be
But what would be even better if they made it
with my fresh Striped Bass
We'll Tung Hoi Kitchen, my Chinese food place on

Another Big Bass for Peter

My Tue AM charter couldn't make it today due to work schedule
So I took Kat and Peter out instead.
We hit the water at 6 Am, a COLD 32 degrees, good thing for that HEATER. We found Shads all over the west cut! There were so many the fish were full. We had 1 run off but no hook ups. So we headed right out side to the spot and Found some Bass up to 18.5 Lbs 38". We landed a total of 3 Bass out of several run off's and who knows how many blues. Peter landed another quality fish I got it all on Video and then he RELEASED it.

Tried in the west cut 1 more time saw a surf caster hooking up on a storm shad but we only had time for 1 drift so that was it for us today. Can't wait for tomorrow!!!

The Pastor's get the Blues

Finally got Pastor Mike out for some fun today.
He had his good friend Carl Butler from
http://fantheflame.websiteanimal.com/
Carl is from Australia and he was our
 guest speaker this past weekend
at Lambs Chapel
http://www.lambschapel.net/index.php
We headed out this morning to find some
birds working in the back west cut of the inlet
We quickly let our lines out and had a run off.
No set, Bass must have let it go
We made 2 more drifted and had a blue chop up
Pastor Mikes eel .
After that I decided to give it a try out side
I headed to my spot and found it to be a we
bit much trying to get close enough and stay safe
We had a south wind with out going tide, meaning wind against tide
but we had 2 good run offs and the eels
came back whole... That means the Bass are still there
It wasn't comfortable so I decided to try just inside the Breakers
and we Immediately hooked up into
some BIG CHOPPER BLUES
Here take a look at Mike's and Carl's Videos
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGSaDuO8lzc
http://www.youtube.com/group/Pablo2008videos#
http://www.youtube.com/group/Pablo2008videos# Well we could see the Bass in the waves but it just
wasn't safe enough to get that close
But we tried and we kept getting
BIG BLUES
At one point Carl hooked into a huge fish
all most spooled him
I thought for sure he landed a HUGE BASS
but again it was a 12 to 15 lbs Blue
We left at 10 AM when the bite died down
Great Fishing with you Hope you come back one day
Hey Mike next week's open

IN THE FIELD
Blackfish Are Still Biting

By Michael Wright

Pastor Mike Jankowski of Lambs Chapel with a chopper bluefish he pulled from Moriches Inlet over the weekend.

“When the wind is in the west, ’tis of all winds the best.”

Yeah, right. My bass it is.
It may be the exception that proves the rule, since west winds usually do bring bright clear skies,

but west winds are almost always dreaded by East End fishermen.

It blows straight up the beach and muddies up the surf.

In Montauk it is about the only wind that you just can’t seem to hide from on either the north side or the south side,

except maybe in Scotts and parts of the Bluffs,

and it seems to blow wind-against-tide whether it’s ebb or flood.
So it’s been a long week for bass hounds.

The southeast blow last Wednesday didn’t produce the bite such a storm would be expected to kick up,

either up front in Montauk or in the inlets.

And since then, the west wind has kept the ocean big and brown and the fish hidden from sight beyond the breakers.
Prior to the storm the big schools of peanut and adult bunker had just made

the turn around Montauk and begun their death march down the sand beaches.

The bite had been pretty consistent before the stormy weather messed up the ocean.

There were a few shots on the beaches in Southampton Monday morning and afternoon,

so maybe as the wind settles on Tuesday and Wednesday the beach bite will turn back on.

With temps still fairly warm and the ocean hovering at about 61 degrees,

the little bunkers should stay in the area if the brown water didn’t drive them out already.
Montauk has been a sanctuary on the beaches,

save for some scattered shots of rats.

There are huge schools of mostly bluefish tearing through the rips on schools of rain minnows

and they’re on the baby weakfish back in Gardiners Bay.

The boats drifting live baits in Shinnecock and Moriches inlets are

getting plenty of fish in the high teens and low 20s

and a few are being taken on bucktails and plugs in Moriches.
The one thing the west winds don’t seem to have put a damper on is the blackfish bite in Block Island Sound.

The closer to home spots do seem to have slowed a bit in the last week or so,

but the boats making the longer runs to Fishers Island,

Block and some of the Rhode Island spots have been finding consistent full-on bites of some fish into the trophy size range.

The Capt. Mark came back with a pair of monster togs,

a 14-pounder and a 15-pounder,

on one trip and 11- to 12-pound fish have been fairly common for the guys who know what they’re doing.
The heave has had Shinnecock Inlet closed out for most of the last several days,

but the Shinnecock Star and other bottom fishermen are expecting to get back on the reefs by the middle of this week.

The blackfish off Shinnecock aren’t generally as big as the Sound fish,

but they’ve been plentiful with a few fish in the 8-pound class taken lately.

The inlet jetties at Shinnecock and Moriches are giving up some nice togs,

too, for shorebound anglers. Green crabs work well but hermits are the best if you can get them.
The draggers working just off the beaches are getting lots of big weakfish these days but as is typical at this time of the year,

the big tiderunners don’t seem to be feeding, and very few are caught by anglers.
There’s still lots of bait around. Between the anchovies in Gardiners Bay,

the herring in the inlets and the bunker still holding in Moriches Bay

there are plenty of reasons to think there are some great days of fishing in the near future.

Catch ’em up. See you out there.

Capt. Paul Peluso a.k.a Pablo

Peter Parker caught this 31-pound striper outside Moriches Inlet last week with Capt. Paul Peluso of Mama Mia Charters.

IN THE FIELD
More Bait, More Fish
By Michael Wright

A bit of good news came out of the National Marine Fisheries Service this month regarding giant bluefin tuna catches this year. According to NMFS, the number of bluefin in the large medium and giant class (fish generally ranging from 150 to 800 pounds) taken in U.S. waters is already up 25 percent over last year’s total take of fish with one of the best months of fishing still not tallied. Nearly 1,000 bluefin have been caught this year, most by rod and reel fishermen working off Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. There’s been a good bite off Race Point and in Cape Cod Bay for the first time in several years.
Granted, the numbers are still a dismal shadow of the bluefin take even a decade ago, to say nothing of half a century ago. American anglers haven’t been able to catch even their tiny allotted quota in several years, but the improvement offers one glimmer of hope—not for the tuna, but for herring and, possibly, for striped bass fishermen.
This year, federal fisheries managers closed what is known as mid-water trawling for herring in the waters near Cape Cod and Jefferies Ledge. The main reason for closing the inshore mid-water fishery was complaints from commercial cod and flounder fishermen who say the herring trawlers were killing precious stocks of important food fish in their bycatch. But what the closure has meant is lots of herring, and following them, lots of tuna. It also may mean a good herring run for us this year.
Last year, the herring run off Montauk was rather anemic. A rather small body of fish came through Montauk, but they didn’t come until late, and a couple of big storms had already pushed most of the striped bass out of town so there was never really much of a bite. But with the amounts of herring being reported off the Cape this year there is reason to hope we’ll see a serious late-November and December fishery here like we’d had for several seasons.
In the meantime, some other baitfish species are keeping striper anglers more than happy these days. The bunker schools began pushing out of the harbors with the cold nights last week. The peanuts moved into the surf line over the weekend and finally brought some bigger fish to the beach with them.
The night patrol in Montauk has been taking some fish in the 30- and 40-pound class pretty consistently, and the north side has had shots of fish from schoolies into the low 20s pretty much every morning.
In Southampton, bay anchovies were still on the menu and produced some great fishing along the village beaches early in the week. Midday on Wednesday saw a shot of bigger fish come into the surf briefly—Jake Harrison and Jimmy Aries got nice 30s, and a couple of fish in the high 20s came up, too. The rocks of the east jetty are giving up a steady pick of fish from the teens to the mid 20s for the lineup of guys doing the bucktail ballet. There have been some big blackfish taken off the rocks too, up to 8 pounds on green crabs, just like the old days.
Moriches Inlet has been on fire. Lots of fish in the 20s and 30s are being taken by boats and rock hoppers alike. The incoming tide on the east jetty and the outgoing in the hole west of the inlet are the spots to look.
The big west wind expected Wednesday probably browned things out for a few days. Here’s to hoping the backside is as bright as the last week has been.
Catch ’em up, fellas. See you out there.

Timmy Again???
Went out in Dean's boat today
We headed straight  out to same spot as yesterday
with BEAUTIFUL temps no wind and calm seas
Timmy again lands another quality fish
we didn't have a tape and my scale was on my boat
so my guess is 38 to 40"
18-20 LBS???

Eels were again the good call.
After that we had 1 chase Dean to the boat
he Bit the eel ran and spit the hook
and we all had Blues again
around 9 am it got real quiet
we left at 10 AM
Bay was FULL
of Adult Bunkers
Who else wants one?
Don't Miss this

Tim's 22.5 Lbs Bass

Wasn't planning on going out today . I was heading down to the boat around 7 AM a late day start. I was going to drop her off to Patchogue Shores I need a star board water pump replaced. Not a big Deal
but she's running a little hot .
So as I'm half way down to the boat Tim calls.
Yo you going out? I said I wasn't but I could use a hand
got any eel? Yeah there's about 6 left over from yesterday trip .
Great I'll meet you at the boat.
I see there's about 4 live eels and 2 dead ones
Hmmm I guess this will be a short trip
We head out I round the inlet I see MEGA SHAD'S all over
Tim says what the hell are you doing???
Don't you see the fish all over???
I say of course but do you want a 20" fish or 20 lbs???
Tim says ok and we round the Inlet to see
4 other boats maybe
GREAT!!!
I head straight to my spot. Incoming with a SE wind maybe 5 mph.
1st drift Nada
2nd Drift Blue Fish
3rd Drift Tim gets picked up, His line runs off then stops
I yell open your bail he does and his line runs out again
then it stops. I say wait don't touch it!
1 second later it's peeling I say NOW, NOW,
SET THE HOOK!!!
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!
Tim's on with something Heavy!!!
He can't gain any on this fish???
Were like what is it???
I can see it's dorsal fin but can't quiet make it out
It looks funny maybe you foul hooked it???
It looks like it's coming in back wards???
No wait it's a HUGE BASS
20 Plus Tim I say
We'll here just play the Video
After that all we caught was BIG BLUES
But we really didn't care
Tim had his 1st Fall Keeper and a
BEAUTY to boot
So we headed in dropped off the boat and head to work

Also we say a MEGA BLITZ at the Sea Buoy
all the BIG BLUES you could want!!!
We didn't go we stayed in my spot and caught
BIG BASS!!!
Tim I'm so glad you got that Big Fish.

Brain Connelly's
Benefit Charter

This past summer I donated a FREE CHARTER to help Brian Connelly out aka (Bigshow).
We'll Mark, John, Bud and Rick cashed in on the good Bassing we've been having landing 3 keeper Bass to 18 Lbs.
We only kept a few of the smaller Blues releasing several bigger ones
The Ocean was still ROUGH from yesterdays blow so I couldn't work my spot right off the bat.
I opted to stay away from the deadly breakers and watched a few guys get beat up and 1 guy nearly capsized!!!

As the Am wore on the ocean got calmer and calmer and just as a few decided to take off .

I headed back to my spot and SAFELY worked the area. Key was, short drift's, Short Leaders and no weight's.

We had fish on all most every drift and the guys did a fantastic job letting them run and setting the hooks!

We only missed 2 for the whole time we were out.

It was a Pleasure to fish with guys who really know what they were doing.

4 eels out and not 1 tangle!!!
You guys are welcome back anytime!
Pleasure was all mine
Hope you enjoy those steaks tonight!!!
